Why Howes Percival?
At Howes Percival, we are looking for original thinkers, people who don’t just follow the crowd and head for the City or Birmingham. A lot of the senior people here have come from backgrounds in firms like that and we know the grass is greener here. We do the quality of work and have the quality of clients you would normally find in much larger firms, and as a trainee here, you’ll get stuck in at the outset and have immediate exposure, under supervision of course, to this work and these clients. You can expect to take on increasing levels of responsibility very quickly: this is not a photocopying apprenticeship; our trainees work hard, but they really do enjoy it.
We offer 4 seats across the departments and trainees in the East Midlands region (the Leicester and Northampton offices) will normally spend time in more than one office – in fact we encourage our trainees to experience other offices in the region, as making a good impression on a wider circle of lawyers increases oppurtunities for that trainee to qualify into the firm. Most trainees repeat as their fourth seat the area of law into which they wish to qualify, and because of the quality of the training, their transition from trainee to qualified lawyer is seamless, which helps them, the firm and its clients.
Culture-fit is also very important to us. Academic excellence is important, but we encourage potential trainees to try to size us up and see if they identify with and like the way we do what we do; and we try to do the same with them. In a smaller firm it’s crucial that we all enjoy working with each other and have the same core values. We are an open and friendly firm, from top to bottom.
Our retention rate is excellent, both in terms of the number of trainees who qualify with us, and those who stay with us as the years unfold beyond that. This is because when we recruit, we are not just looking for people who will do their two years with us and then leave, we are trying to recruit people who will build their careers with us. On qualification, there is every opportunity for rapid progression and we reward exceptional performance well. There is no glass ceiling here.
