Graduate Programme

We recognise that trainees are the future. As such our trainee recruitment programme is extremely important to us. Recruiting and training the right individuals is a priority, after all they will soon be running the firm.

The structure of your training

As a Howes Percival trainee you will complete four six-month seats, each one in a different department.  If you are a trainee in the Norwich office in all likelihood you will stay in the Norwich office.  However, trainees in the East Midlands usually have the opportunity to gain experience in at least two of our offices and we always aim to accommodate your preference.

In some instances, we are also able to offer a secondment to one of our clients where you would work in-house as part of the business gaining valuable commercial experience.

During the course of your training you will undertake the Professional Skills Course. Whilst the core modules of the Professional Skills Course are provided by external trainers, the elective modules are all conducted in house allowing them to be tailored to the specific areas of law and specific tasks you are likely to encounter during your training. We find that this tailored approach gives our trainees the very best opportunity to develop and grow into successful lawyers.

We firmly believe in developing your marketing skills from an early stage and this forms an integral part of the training programme.  Trainees are encouraged to attend all client events hosted by the firm such as client seminars and seasonal parties.  You will also be encouraged to attend external marketing events and events hosted by our clients.

Partner Supervision

Whilst Howes Percival has a training principle who will oversee your training, on a day to day basis you will report directly to a partner or senior fee earner.  After three months and again at the end of your seat you will be formally appraised by the partner training you. Towards the end of your seat you will also be appraised by the training principal who will discuss with you your ambitions and aspirations for the future.  These are then taken into account in placing you in your next seat.

The Recruitment Process

The deadline for the 2019 Training Contract is 14 July 2017. Please note, we may close for applications before this date if we consider it appropriate to do so based on the number of training contract applications received.

We will hold our assessment centre for shortlisted candidates on 25 July 2017 in Leicester and 2 August 2017 in Norwich.  You should therefore make sure that you are available on these dates to avoid any disappointment.

Don’t just take our word for it

Howes Percival was voted one of the UK’s top law firms for legal trainees in’s 2013-14 survey of training contracts and vacation schemes which looked at various topics including training, career progression, culture, work-life balance, level of responsibility and job satisfaction.  Participants were asked to rate their firm, their training and their overall experiences.
