8.30

I arrive at the office and, as my computer boots up, I begin the day with a cup of coffee as I review my to-do list. I then check my emails to see if there have been any overnight developments that require my attention.

8.45

There is an email from my supervisor waiting for me. He has received a list of questions from a client regarding how their company, which we recently helped set up, is governed and run. He has a mid-morning call with the client, so he needs me to use the company’s Articles of Association and other documents to prepare a suitable guidance note addressing the client’s issues.

10.00

I turn my attention to some academy conversion work from the day before. I had been asked to draft various agreements for several schools that are converting to academy status. I finish the drafting and take the time to proof-read carefully each document before handing them to my supervisor for his comments.

11.30

We are exchanging contracts on a deal and have received the other side’s signed documents. I have been told to prepare our counterpart documents for exchange, along with a covering letter. I make sure the client has signed in all the relevant places and draft a short letter to the other side enclosing the documents. After some amendments from my supervisor, I place the letter in the outgoing mail.

13.00

There are several supermarkets within walking distance of the office, so I have time to head out for some fresh air and something to eat.

"Time flies because the work in the department is varied and demanding, but always interesting."

14.00

My supervisor has reviewed the academy conversion documents I drafted earlier, so I begin inserting his changes and suggested amendments. They are to be sent to the Department of Education by the end of the day, so I give the documents a final check before handing them back to my supervisor.

15.30

Having addressed my most pressing tasks for the day, I turn my attention to the remaining items on my to-do list. Two matters we have been working on recently completed, so I begin compiling completion bibles. This can be a time-consuming task, but it is very important that key documents are safely stored away and that we keep an organised bible for future reference.

17.00

One of my responsibilities is to keep everyone in the office updated on business and networking events taking place in and around the Milton Keynes area. I compile a list and circulate it for discussion at our next Business Development meeting.

17.30

After tying up some loose ends and completing some small administrative tasks, I check whether my supervisor or the other fee earners in the department need any assistance. Before I go, I tidy my desk and update my to-do list so that I am ready for the next day. However, when there is a need to work late, be it a deadline or an urgent piece of work, these are good opportunities to demonstrate your commitment.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Company Commercial department. Time flies because the work in the department is varied and demanding, but always interesting. I have been entrusted with a degree of responsibility and supported by the team throughout my stay.
