8.15

I arrive at work bright and early and start up my computer. I find it is always better to arrive early so I can plan my day ahead, organise anything that is urgent to be dealt with by my supervising partner and finish off any filing and administration from the day before.

8.45

First email in from a clerk for Counsel who we have instructed on a matter. The email is regarding the format of a document sent through the day before. I save the document as a PDF and send it through to the clerk as requested.

9.00

I deal with an email sent through by a client in the early hours of the morning. I need to speak to the partner about our full response but acknowledge the email nonetheless so as the client is aware we have picked up his message and will endeavour to respond by the end of the day.

10.00

I am finalising a schedule of costs in respect of a Court of Protection matter that is going to final hearing in the coming weeks.

11.30

My supervisor asks me to research some trust advice for one of our clients who needs an answer by the end of the day. I write up and send to my supervisor my report on the trust research carried out.

"I find it is always better to arrive early so I can plan my day ahead, organise anything that is urgent to be dealt with by my supervising partner and finish off any filing and administration from the day before."

13.00

I break for lunch and walk over to the nearby shopping centre with fellow trainees to catch up on how their seats and workload are going. We also discuss the upcoming trainee meeting. This meeting affords all of the trainees across the different offices and training principals a chance to discuss our experiences so far.

14.00

I draft a full response to the client who emailed overnight, having discussed it with my supervisor earlier that day.

15.00

Another client calls with an urgent enquiry about the administration of an estate matter. I collect as much information as I can from the client and explain that I will discuss with my supervisor and get back to her as soon as possible. My supervisor has just left the office so I have to be quick thinking and call another colleague in the department. I then revert to the client with the advice. It is really important to make a detailed file note of the conversations that occurred and to leave the appropriate paper trail on the matter.

16.00

I attend a client meeting with a colleague to sign a Will. It is really interesting to attend meetings and observe the procedure involved. It is also nice to attend these sorts of client meetings as the clients tend to be very friendly and chatty.

17.00

I draft a letter to the client after the meeting and put together the enclosures. I have missed the post for today but I ensure it is ready to put in the post tomorrow.

17.30

I complete my training diary, make a jobs list for tomorrow and tidy up any filing of matters. I then leave the office in good time to ensure that I can attend netball training at my club in Birmingham.
