The Institute of Quarrying (IQ) has relaunched its go-to reference book, Health and Safety Law in Quarries with new content authored by Howes Percival partner, Alan Millband.
Alan specialises in health, safety and environmental law, and over many years has applied that specialism extensively in the quarrying and extractives sectors. He heads the Health and Safety and Regulatory Team at Howes Percival LLP.
The original Health and Safety Law in Quarries book was first published in 1991 and has been comprehensively revised and edited in light of the ever-increasing complexity of demands that health and safety places on the quarrying industry.
Produced in two volumes, the book covers the Health and Safety and Work Act and the requirements of Quarries Regulations (1999) in the first volume and other related legislation and relevant case law in the second.
Regarding the latest edition of the book, Alan said:
“The original authors, first Trevor King then Eric Darlow, using their immense experience and know-how, created what was in its time a comparative rarity - a sector-specific health and safety text and reference book. In recent years the much-changed arena of health and safety law meant that the book had become dated. The challenge for me was bringing the book up to date from the legal perspective, without sacrificing the essence, aims and practical elements of the original versions.”

Alan is also a guest lecturer on health and safety law on the minerals management degree course at the University of Derby.
